SENIOR SERVICES PROGRAMS

The CHESHIRE SENIOR CENTER is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. to provide programs, nutrition, and socialization opportunities, including classes, a lunch program, the CHAT (Cheshire Home Safety Awareness Team), and Intergenerational programing. The Widow and Widowers program meets every second and fourth Sundays of the month from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.

The SENIOR SERVICES SOCIAL WORKER visits clients in their homes in her office, and facilitates a monthly Caregiver Support Group and a quarterly meeting of local elderly senior service providers.

The Senior Services staff make REFERRALS to state, local and private agencies. Service referrals include: nursing homes, adult day cares, in-home services, housing, insurance, etc. These have more than doubled during the past year.

VOLUNTEERS call local shut-ins on a daily basis to check on their health status for the day. If the client does not respond, a neighbor or family member is contacted. If no one is available, the police crisis worker, senior social worker or municipal agent will investigate.

The ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM is a four-van system that provides transportation both in town and out of town for medical appointments, shopping, socialization, cultural events, local restaurants and senior center programs. This service is available to residents over the age of 55 or people who are either temporarily or permanently disabled. Arrangements for rides are made through the Senior Center by calling at least twenty-four hours in advance. All four buses are lift equipped to handle wheelchairs and individuals that have trouble with steps. Riders make a suggested donation of .25 cents for in-town service and $2.00 for out of-town service per entrance on the van. This money goes to a special fund to purchase replacement vehicles.
