Economic Development
Cheshire is proud of its diversified business community, which provides a variety of goods, services and employment opportunities. These companies play a key role in making Cheshire an ideal town in which to raise a family and do business. The Economic Development Commission (EDC) and Department provide a number of activities to attract new business development and assist Cheshire businesses.
The Economic Development Commission, a seven-member body appointed by the town council, works with the Economic Development Department and its coordinator to promote development of the town's resources. The commission feels that economic growth should be of high quality and compatible with the town and that future commercial and industrial growth be linked closely to thoughtful planning and zoning decisions.
The EDC takes an active role in issues that affect the town's quality of life. The commission also maintains a cooperative relationship with the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. The only town in Connecticut to do so, the commission and chamber co-host "Business Appreciation Day", a major program for Cheshire businesses and town officials.
The economic development coordinator works to recruit new businesses to Cheshire and assist existing companies with concerns and growth plans. The coordinator maintains information on available sites and buildings and utilizes the services and programs of state agencies and utilities and other organizations to assist prospective and existing businesses interested in companies on a regular basis to discuss concerns that may require the attention of town officials.
Cheshire is a business-friendly community. Town officials, the economic development coordinator and planning staff work closely with each business applicant to ensure a planning approval process that is smooth and timely.
Recognizing the need to remain competitive with Connecticut cities and towns, the Cheshire Town Council has adopted a policy for granting incentives for new and existing companies that are in accord with the town's planning and economic goals. Real estate property tax and off-site infrastructure assistance have been granted to small and large firms in the town's effort to invest in business development.
Cheshire welcomes inquiries and the opportunity to assist companies with their growth plans. For further information about local incentives and our well managed, centrally located and attractive town, feel free to contact the Economic Development Department.
