PATROL DIVISION

The Patrol Division, in addition to the traditional functions of a motorized patrol force, practices highly visible and proactive policing through officer-initated activity.  Officers patrol 32 square miles, 24 hours a day seven days a week.  They also routinely provide support for the Traffic Division.

The Communications Division within Patrol are responsible for Cheshire’s “911” call center and handle both routine calls and emergency calls for police, fire, and ambulance service.  This 911 call center is a 24-hour operation and its members are the first contact in any reported emergency call.

Motorized patrols are enhanced by specialized units including Bicycle Patrol, ATV Patrol, and Motorcycle Squad.

  • The Bicycle Squad uses mountain bikes to easily increase the range that officers can patrol, allowing them access to Cheshire’s many parks and business areas. The Bicycle Squad has also proven to be a valuable tool during large events where crowd control is necessary.
  • The ATV Squad's main purpose is to patrol the Town’s open space and problem spots that normal patrol vehicles cannot access.  This program has proven itself to be a valuable tool in the Cheshire Police Department’s motorized fleet for crime prevention, crowd control, and safety enforcement.
  • The Motorcycle Squad officers are highly trained and experienced operators who have added flexibility and allowed a more rapid response to areas not easily accessed by a cruiser.

TRAFFIC DIVISION

In addition to motor vehicle enforcement activities, the officers in the Traffic Division respond to traffic accidents, receive and process general traffic complaints, perform motor vehicle crash investigations, oversee the purchasing and installation of all traffic control devices and signs on local roads, represent the Local Traffic Authority interests in state and town roadway projects, maintain contact with various state and local agencies, work closely with various town agencies related to site plan and certificate of occupancy compliance issues, and maintain the fleet of police vehicles.

All officers assigned to the Traffic Division receive extensive training regarding accident investigation and crash reconstruction.
