Yankee Gas Pipeline Works Yankee Gas Pipeline Work Continues Through Cheshire: Traffic Alert Construction continues on Yankee Gas’ 16-mile Waterbury-to-Wallingford pipeline expansion. In Cheshire, two construction crews are working along West Main Street Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additionally, trenching continues on Main Street during nighttime hours (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.), Sunday through Thursday. Traffic congestion may become very heavy due to construction. For safety reasons, lane closures requiring alternating one-way traffic may be implemented when construction prohibits the use of the full roadway width. Motorists should expect delays and those travelling along West Main Street during the day are strongly encouraged to take alternate routes whenever possible. Over the upcoming Labor Day holiday, no trenching will occur from Friday, September 3, through Tuesday, September 7. Construction will resume on Wednesday, September 8. The new natural gas pipeline is being installed beneath roadways in Cheshire, Wallingford, Prospect, Naugatuck and Waterbury. Construction work is planned and conducted with the safety of all motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and the construction workers in mind. The public is asked to use caution and stay alert at all times when travelling through work zones. Motorists are asked to obey police overseeing traffic control and if at a standstill to avoid blocking driveways. Yankee Gas will remain diligent in maintaining safe access to residences and businesses throughout the duration of this project. Emergency vehicle traffic will be given priority passage through construction areas. The new pipeline, when operational by the fourth quarter of 2011, will allow more customers in Cheshire to use natural gas for their homes and businesses. Additionally, it will increase the integrity, reliability and flexibility of the natural gas system in Cheshire.
