BICYCLE PATROL
The Cheshire Police Department Bicycle Patrol has been in existence for approximately ten years. It is currently comprised of six members, a Lieutenant, a Sergeant, and four Patrol Officers.
The objective of the bicycle patrol is to provide an alternative police service in the most cost effective and beneficial manner possible. Each member of the unit rides a bicycle outfitted with the accessories necessary to respond to emergency situations. These include audible warning devices, flashing lights and first aid supplies. Officers also ride with all the personal equipment utilized by motor officers with the exception of long weapons.
The following are benefits of the bicycle unit as determined by the experiences of unit members:
· Bicycles can move more freely in congested areas and can reach places inaccessible to police cruisers. · Bicycles provide stealth and allow officers to ride up to a scene before they are noticed. · Bicycles allow officers to be more approachable than do cruisers. · Bicycle officers set good examples to young riders as they promote helmet use and bike safety. · Bicycle use promotes good health and decreased healthcare costs. · Bicycles are cost effective in that the average cost of outfitting one is approximately $1,200.00 as compared to the cost of a cruiser.
The Cheshire Police Department Bicycle Patrol has focused its efforts on patrolling parks and recreation facilities, elderly housing complexes and commerce centers. Its members have gained valuable relationships through public interaction and will continue to be the most visible and accessible unit within the Police Department.
The International Police Mountain Bike Association certifies Cheshire Bicycle Patrol Officers. This certification requires completion of a forty-hour cycling course. Officers are required to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of riding scenarios including crowds, rugged terrain, obstructions, and surface road sprints. Officers are tested on their knowledge of regulations pertaining to bicycle use and learn to maintain and repair bicycles in the field. Bicycle Patrol Officers learn various tactics and techniques for responding to calls for assistance and learn to use a bicycle as an additional tool of their trade.
