SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
The Cheshire Police Department participates in a bus safety program for all kindergarten students each year. The program is designed to teach the children about safety measures which we feel are most effective in protecting the safety of children while boarding, leaving and riding in school buses. The children view a safety slide show on "Blinky The Talking Bus" which is presented by the Department of Education and the Bus Company. A talk on bus safety is given by the police officer and many safety measures are discussed. The children are given a ride on a school bus with emphasis being placed on the bus stop and boarding safety initiative. The presentation includes safe walking practices to and from the bus stop, how and where to wait for the school bus, and how to board and leave the bus safely including emergency evacuation.
The following safety measures are discussed.
Wait for the school bus in a safe place. Stand away from the road. Watch for the bus.
Do not run or fool around.
Cross the street safely in front of the bus and watch out for vehicles that do not stop for the school bus.
Walk at least ten paces ahead of the bus.
Always stay were the bus driver can see you. Remember that there are blind spots which prevent the driver from seeing everything around the bus. The "Danger Zone" is an area close to the sides of the bus and also the rear and front of the bus. The closer a child is to the bus the more danger they are in.
Get on the bus in single file use the hand rail and listen to the bus driver at all times.
Keep the aisle clear of feet, books and lunch box. Do not carry large objects on the bus.
Stay seated when riding the school bus. It is unsafe to stand up when the bus is moving.
Obey the bus driver at all times especially if it becomes necessary to evacuate the bus.
Talk quietly with your friends on the school bus, too much noise distracts the bus driver. Never put your head or arms out of the window.
It is dangerous to throw things out the window.
Never throw things in the bus.
When you get off the bus take five giant steps away from the bus, out of the danger zone.
Never go back for anything, and never bend down near or under the bus even if you dropped items. Remember that some cars may not stop for the school bus.
Most children are hurt outside a bus rather than inside one. Always maintain eye contact with the school bus driver and never cross behind the bus.
