RESIDENTIAL GRASS CLIPPINGS

The Town of Cheshire is again providing a container at the Solid Waste Disposal Facility at 1286 Waterbury Road for disposal of residential grass clippings only. Disposal by commercial operations is not permitted.

Residents must empty grass clippings out of any bag or container that is not made of paper and biodegradable. The fee is $1.00 for up to every six (6) bags emptied. This service will be available from Saturday, April 26, 2008 through Saturday, November 8, 2008, during normal Solid Waste Disposal Facility hours (the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.).

Additionally, the Transfer Station will be open every Monday morning from Monday, April 28, 2008 through Monday, November 3, 2008 for grass collection. Residents may bring grass clippings to the Solid Waste Disposal Facility from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (excluding May 26, 2008 and September 1, 2008). BULKY WASTE & SCRAP METAL COLLECTION 2008

The Town of Cheshire’s bi-annual Bulky Waste and Scrap Metal Collection will begin on September 22, 2008 and will continue for five weeks, concluding on October 24, 2008.

The residential Bulky Waste/Scrap Metal pickup will be scheduled for one of these weeks and will be based on the day of the week in which the property owner’s current curbside pickup occurs. The schedule is as follows:

Placed at curbside - September 22th, 2008 – Section #1
For all areas that have their weekly residential curbside pickup on Monday.

Placed at curbside – September 29th , 2008 – Section #2
For all areas that have their weekly residential curbside pickup on Tuesday.

Placed at curbside – October 6th, 2008 – Section #3
For all areas that have their weekly residential curbside pickup on Wednesday.

Placed at curbside – October 13th , 2008 – Section #4
For all areas that have their weekly residential curbside pickup on Thursday.

Placed at curbside – October 20th, 2008 – Section #5
For all areas that have their weekly residential curbside pickup on Friday.

The contractor collecting bulky waste items will be utilizing several crews to accomplish this work and the volume of material will vary from household to household. Therefore, it is not possible to establish in advance the exact day within a scheduled week that a property owner’s collection will occur. Residents should place all bulky waste and scrap metal items in two separate piles out at the curb by not later than 5:30 a.m. on the Monday of the week assigned to each area. The contractor will not return to any household once the collection for that street has been completed.

Only bulky waste and scrap metal items will be collected. Examples of bulky waste are items such as televisions, couch or sofa, mattress, box springs, stuffed chairs, recliners, large wooden furniture and computer equipment. Examples of scrap metal are items such as refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers. All doors must be removed from any appliance.

SNOW AND PARKING, PLOWING AND SIDEWALKS
With winter upon us, the Town of Cheshire Public Works Department is asking for your cooperation to allow us to provide maximum service to all our residents by helping us keep our Town roads safe.

During snowstorms, there is no parking on the roadways by Town Ordinance. Failure to move a vehicle could result in being towed. Parking ban announcements will be made through the local media.

Town ordinance also states that property owners are responsible for clearing all snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours of the end of the snowfall or precipitation. The Public Works Department suggests that residents wait until the Town plows have pushed back snow to the curb line before clearing the sidewalk areas. This generally happens within 4 to 6 hours after the snow has stopped.

Residents who live on a cul-de-sac or lesser-traveled roads are encouraged to be patient with the removal of snow from these areas. Priority is given to clearing access in the travel portions of the through roads. Once the storm subsides, the roads will be cut back to the curb line, which allows room for additional snowfall from future snowstorms. This also allows access to mailboxes and newspaper receptacles and opens up storm drains to allow melting snow to runoff properly.

The Public Works Department suggests that residents make certain their mailboxes are at least 42 inches above the roadway and set back slightly from the edge of the road so that the postal carrier can reach it, behind either the face of curb or edge of road. The Public Works Department does not replace mailboxes that are displaced by snow or slush from plows. If contact with a plow can be shown, then it will be replaced.

Residents and private plowing contractors should take note that the Town prohibits snow to be placed on any public highway in such a manner as to impede or inconvenience travel on any roadway. Residents or private contractors will also be held responsible for any curb damage done as a result of plowing snow across roadways.

Thank you for assisting the Public Works Department, and if you have any questions, please contact the Public Works Office at 271-6650.
