The Town of Cheshire’s bi-annual Bulky Waste and Scrap Metal Collection will begin on September 22, 2008 and will continue for five weeks, concluding on October 24, 2008.

The residential Bulky Waste/Scrap Metal pickup will be scheduled for one of these weeks and will be based on the day of the week in which the property owner’s current curbside pickup occurs. The schedule is as follows:

Placed at curbside - September 22th, 2008 – Section #1 For all areas that have their weekly residential curbside pickup on Monday.

The contractor collecting bulky waste items will be utilizing several crews to accomplish this work and the volume of material will vary from household to household. Therefore, it is not possible to establish in advance the exact day within a scheduled week that a property owner’s collection will occur. Residents should place all bulky waste and scrap metal items in two separate piles out at the curb by not later than 5:30 a.m. on the Monday of the week assigned to each area. The contractor will not return to any household once the collection for that street has been completed.

Only bulky waste and scrap metal items will be collected. Examples of bulky waste are items such as televisions, couch or sofa, mattress, box springs, stuffed chairs, recliners, large wooden furniture and computer equipment. If possible, residents are asked to take part in the Residential Electronics Recycling Event that will occur on october 25, 2008 at Lincoln Middle School, 164 Centennial Avenue, Meriden CT. This will provide the opportunity to have computer equipment recycled rather than disposed of and also reduce the amount of bulky waste to be collected.

Examples of scrap metal are items such as refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers. All doors must be removed from any appliance.

No mechanical equipment will be utilized to lift objects during the pickup. In an effort to assist the crew in the manual pickup of all items, large items should be cut up or broken down in 4 foot lengths or less.

Scrap metal will be collected separately from bulky waste items and must be placed in a separate and distinct area at the curb. The contractor is unable to sort materials during collection; therefore, bulky waste items and scrap metal items that are mixed together will not be collected. Weekly garbage collection should also be kept separate from this area.

Construction and demolition materials will not be collected. There will be no collection of tires and propane tanks. All hazardous waste materials will not be collected curbside and must be taken to the Hazwaste Central Facility in New Haven.

Residents are encouraged to dispose of non-bulky items such as clothing, toys, books and small appliances in their regular weekly curbside collection. Bulky items may also be brought to the Solid Waste Disposal/Transfer Station during the dates and times indicated above. Entry requirements and fees are also indicated above.
