Q & A
Question: "How can they charge interest when I never got a bill?”

Answer: Late is Late! Any tax or sewer payment received after the deadline for timely payment is late and subject to interest under Connecticut tax law. There are no exceptions, regardless of the reason for the late payment.

Addressing the non-receipt of a tax or sewer bill: Connecticut statutes hold that it is the duty of the owner of property to pay the tax when it is due. The Courts have consistently ruled that the duty to pay a tax is neither created by, nor dependent upon, the receipt of a bill.

If you owned any motor vehicle on October 1 in Connecticut, there is a tax due the following July 1. The tax is due the Town in which the vehicle was registered on the preceding October 1, regardless of your present location. Call the Assessor with any questions about motor vehicle tax liabilities, pro-rating of taxes for cars sold, relocated, etc.
