Town Government

Cheshire’s Town Council/Town Manager form of government was established by Charter in 1971. The Town Council serves as the legislative body of the Town, responsible for policy, ordinances, and the general operating and capital budgets. Council is composed of nine elected volunteer members whose term of office is two years, with elections on odd numbered years. The chairman of the council serves as the honorary mayor and is chosen by council at the beginning of each term. Town Council meets regularly at 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in Council Chambers in Town Hall, with special meetings, public hearings and committee meetings held as needed.

The Town Manager is a paid professional appointed by the Town Council. Serving as the chief executive officer of the Town, the Manager is responsible for the administration and supervision of all Town departments and staff. The Town Manager also prepares and implements the general operating and capital budgets, negotiates and executes legal documents and contracts, and advises council on administrative matters.

In addition to Town Council and the Town Manager, there are 22 boards, commissions and committees comprised of over 150 elected and appointed volunteers who provide input and direction to Town Council and Town administrators. There are 12 departments (excluding the Board of Education) employing 198 full and part-time staff that handle a full range of municipal services and the day to day administration of the Town.

Town offices are located primarily in Town Hall, 84 South Main Street. Offices are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with several offices remaining open until 7:00 p.m. the first Thursday of each month. Offices are closed for major holidays.

The Police Department, Fire Department, Library, Parks and Recreation Department, Artsplace, Senior Center and The Yellow House (youth center) and the Waste Water Treatment Plant each have their own facility at a separate location. See individual web pages for addresses and business hours.
